Niels Diffrient's designs are grounded in the philosophy of form flowing from function. His work has spanned generations, consistently looking past trends to reinvent the tools we use for daily living.

With an academic foundation in aeronautical engineering and a degree from Cranbrook Academy, Diffrient channels his knowledge of the fine arts, engineering and architecture into a design practice of passion and integrity. His highly functional designs are aesthetically timeless.

In his early work with the studios of Eero Saarinen, Marco Zanuso, and Henry Dreyfus, to his current work with Humanscale, Diffrient's visionary talent has been widely recognized. Included in this many honors are the 2003 National Design Award from the Smithsonian's Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum and the 1999 Chrysler Design Award. Most recently he has focused primarily on design for the office environment, particularly seating, where he has won many industry awards.

Liberty Chair
designed by Niels Diffrient

A revolution in mesh seating

Liberty, with Form-Sensing Mesh Technology, is unlike any mesh chair you've seen or experienced. With its tri-panel construction, Liberty has the body-fitting contours that single-panel stretch mesh chairs simply can't achieve. And it offers perfect lumbar support for everyone, without external devices or manual adjustments.

”Beautiful, simple, functional... industrial design at its best.”
—Susan S. Szenasy, Editor-in-Chief, Metropolis, June 2004

“Liberty is one of the most beautiful office chairs ever created.”
—The Grand Rapids Press, June 2004

Intelligent Recline Mechanism

Its self-adjusting recline is provided by a counter-balance recline mechanism which automatically offers the right amount of support through the full range of recline motion, regardless of user size and weight. This offers the simplicity of no tension springs or locks to set and/or release and during recline, the angle between torso and legs opens up for better body function as well as the user maintains near constant eye level during recline.

Pivoting Backrest

For added comfort the pivoting backrest allows for extra motion of the backrest during recline to automatically adjust to the changing needs of the spine with additional lumbar support as needed from the form-sensing mesh.

Tri-Panel Mesh

The tri-panel, non-stretch mesh construction creates body-fitting contours and self-adjusting lumbar support for a customized fit without the use of external lumbar devices to adjust, break or lose. The three different patterns offered are the Monofilament Stripe, the Torque, and the Silver Check. These textiles were designed to provide optimal ergonomic support and comfort by melding strength, flexibility and resiliency. The meshes also have been proven to have low-abrasion to protect clothing.

Seat Cushion

Carefully sculpted to match body contours, the seat cushion increases the contact area reducing pressure points. For maximum pressure distribution you may upgrade to the Gel Seat Cushion, a non-degradable, non-compressible Technogel® layer on top of foam core, which offers unmatched, long-term comfort proven to reduce back muscle stress during sitting.

Liberty & the Environment

Liberty was designed to have minimal impact on our environment. It is lighter in weight and made from significantly fewer parts than every chair in its class, which means that less material and fewer manufacturing processes are used in its creation. More than 50% of the material in Liberty is recycled and more than 60% is recyclable.

Body Fit

With adjustable seat height and seat depth, the Liberty chair provides a range that accommodates 95% of the population. The standard cylindar provides a seat height range of 16 to 21 inches and the seat pan will offer a depth of 16.5 to 18.75 inches.

Casters

The Liberty comes with 3" dual-surface casters which roll easily on carpeted floors and quietly on hard floors.
